This week at Polka Dot Farm Nursery, we had an episode straight out of a storybook – a hilarious case of mistaken identity that turned into an unexpected learning adventure.
The children were building a balancing assault course in the outside classroom when along comes Daniel, the farmer’s son, on his mega tractor. Excited shouts of “Look, it’s Farmer Dan!” filled the air, as the children began to wave vigorously. Dan is getting really good at one-handed tractor driving as he now has to wave back!
But Teddy had a different idea. He shook his head as he told the children they’d got it wrong, “No, no, it’s not FARMER Dan it’s FATHER Dan!” he told everyone.
Cue puzzled looks and a chorus of “Who’s Father Dan?” from most of the other children.
For our non-Catholic families, Father Dan isn’t a farmer but the beloved priest at our local Catholic Church, next to the fire station in Billericay. Teddy, with the enthusiasm of a seasoned storyteller, began explaining about mass, fun activities at church, and the coolness of Father Dan.
This sparked a wildfire of curiosity among the kids: “What’s mass? What happens in a church?” And so, the great debate of Farmer Dan vs. Father Dan became a springboard for a rich, child-led exploration of new concepts.
What unfolded was a thing of beauty. Without any adult nudging, our mini-explorers embarked on a journey of discovery, exchanging knowledge, asking questions, and learning from each other. They listened to Teddy’s understanding of church & mass.
This is the essence of what we cherish at Polka Dot Farm – curiosity in its purest form. It’s about giving children the space to wonder, to question, and to figure out this vast, fascinating world in their unique way. As skilled practitioners, our role often becomes knowing when to step back and let childrens natural curiosity take the lead.
Every day at the farm is a new opportunity for our little ones to craft their own learning experiences, driven by their boundless curiosity. From tractor sightings to tales of Father Dan, every moment is a chance to learn something new.
