When it comes to Saturday nights at our house, we usually grab a bowl of popcorn and spend an hour debating which Sky Movie to watch tonight (Spoiler Alert: We probably end up watching Minions again!)
But the last few weeks have seen a big change to our routine – The return of Gladiators!
Excited by my childhood memories of John Fashanu and Ulrika Johnson, I was super keen to get the children as hooked on Gladiators as I was.
As a child, Saturday evenings were pretty dreamy. After a day playing out with my brother, we would have a bath and get the pjs on, then head downstairs to watch Wolf, Jet and Hunter fight it out. And now it’s back on our screens. The format is unaltered and for me, it was a wonderful trip down memory lane. For the kids, it’s a real highlight of the week. They sit watching the show in its entirety and then spend half an hour running around the lounge re-enacting all the heats. Brilliant. Exactly what my brother and I were doing in the late eighties!
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. I’ve spoken to several people who all feel the same. It made me think about how we look back fondly on our own childhoods and love to recreate that for our own children.
Really similar to what we are doing at nursery!
We are looking back at our “old-school” childhoods and taking all the best bits, then giving our children those experiences. The freedom of being outside. The thrill of playing in the fresh air. Creativity and expressing ourselves through the joy of play. The farm is such an idyllic atmosphere for our children and as practitioners, we feel so lucky to be able to offer them these wonderful early years experiences.
When they grow up, we want them to tell their children about the fun they had on the farm when they were little.
